Why is a dental exam important?

The health of your mouth is essential to know in order to take care of your mastication and also to avoid compromising the aesthetics of your smile.

A visit to the dentist, therefore, allows to avoid future invasive procedures that are often the consequence of excessive neglect.

The prevention of oral health is not only done by following the basics of accurate and daily oral hygiene, but it must necessarily be complemented with a dental checkup which can assess in detail some of the most commonly occurring pathologies in this area.

How often to go to the dentist?

Generally, the appointment with the dentist must be scheduled at least every 6 months, except in special cases when there is a need to shorten this time frame and evaluate even the slightest pain present inside the mouth.

When you go for a dental checkup, usually, x-rays are taken to specifically assess the condition of the mouth; during checkups, it is also likely that you will not have to repeat the same x-ray examinations that were taken during the first visit.

This is always at the discretion of the specialist; that will assess the case and inform about the need to carry out a checkup.

What the dental checkup consists of

A routine dental checkup begins with the patient's general medical history; in this first session, in fact, the dentist tries to get a complete clinical picture of the patient, also assessing any past treatment and problems encountered.

The examination, then, proceeds with a visual examination of the mouth to make a check on the health of the teeth and gums.

If the specialist considers it appropriate, may also decide at this stage to perform radiographic examinations by means of orthopanoramics of the dental arches and make sure that there are no cysts, granulomas, or hidden cavities.
